The American cockroach prefers the warm conditions of a house and is especially attracted to areas around the sink. Their favorite food is human and pet food but they can go as long as three months without food and without water for one month. Once they have become established in a building they are very hard to get rid of.

Cockroaches have been around for years and are often found in places where food is prepared, such as restaurants, as well as homes. They are also, many times, found heavily populating older homes. They leave trails with their feces and the females can lay large amounts of eggs, making them multiply quite rapidly. It is essential that they be eliminated in order to maintain sanitary conditions.

These insects can be injurious to the human health. They carry microbes and can often cause allergic reactions, including asthma, as well as other health problems. Since they often scurry about the floor this is especially a bad situation for young children and pets who often crawl around this area.

There are a number of commercial as well as homemade methods for exterminating roaches. Bait stations and gels containing hydramethylnon and boric acid powder have found to be quite effective for this use. Other baits with egg killers, as well as pest eliminators, are also available at any home improvement store.

A homemade method is known as the ‘Vegas roach trap‘ and consists of using a tall glass jar and placing it where the roaches have been seen, usually on a kitchen counter top. Sticks are placed, leading up to the top of the jar, a small amount of food inside, enticing the roaches to climb up the sticks and go into the jar. Once inside, they are unable to climb back out. Water should also be placed inside the jar so they will drown.

Another suggestion is to mix equal parts of borax and sugar together and apply under cabinets, under the sink, baseboards and other places. It is stated that the roaches eat the mixture, because of the sugar, and the borax causes them to die. This is a method many people prefer because it is inexpensive, has no fumes or chemicals and is friendly to the environment.

The borax and sugar method is the one most popular in the average household. It is easy to use and seems to produce excellent results. Of course, keeping the kitchen area clean at all times, as well as not having leaking water pipes, is essential to prevent these and other types of household pests. It is always a good idea to store food in well-sealed containers and it should be noted that anything sweet is a great attraction for them.
