The Problems Of Roach Infestation

There are times when things in the home seem to be going normally and then, one night when turning on the kitchen light, one sees numerous black bugs running about. These bugs are American cockroaches. They are black in color, have nests with eggs, and are approximately 1/2 inch long when fully grown. When this happens one has what is known as roach infestation.

Cockroaches are drawn to food that is not properly stored as well as leaking water pipes. They like a warm atmosphere and do not like light. That is why one seldom sees them during the day, as it is night when they come out to forage for food.

Kitchens and dining rooms that are not kept clean and have spilled or open food sitting around are the prime targets of this pest. They are especially attracted to anything sweet, especially sugar but any food will do. This is the reason all food should be kept in tight containers, the refrigerator or other places that are not easily accessible. However, it should be noted that they are attracted to water also, hence being drawn to the leaking water pipes.

Unfortunately, like many insects of this type, they carry bacteria on their bodies which can be harmful to human health. Contact with this bacteria can lead to a person having allergies, asthma and other conditions. Needless to say, keeping everything clean and sanitary is a must to keep everyone in the family healthy.

One place this pest is especially active is in apartment houses. If one apartment acquires them as guests they rapidly spread throughout the building. Should this happen the landlord should immediately be notified of the condition. As a rule, some kind of roach killer will be provided all the occupants. On rare occasions, a pest exterminator might be called in to treat the entire building.

There are a number of homemade as well as commercial products on the market for getting rid of cockroaches. The Internet has a number of sites that address both kinds of roach killer, with suggestions and very good testimonials regarding their effectiveness. Whatever is chosen all information should be carefully read to be sure there is no safety factor involved. This is especially important if there are small children or animals in the home.

While the cockroach is a pest in America it is considered a delicious snack in Cambodia. Other interesting facts are, crushed and applied they will ease the pain of a sting, they can live a week without a head and then die from lack of water. In addition, they have white blood, females can reproduce without a male but will produce only female cockroaches and Australia has the largest one of these insects, in the world, weighing up to 50 grams.

Cockroaches have been around since the beginning of time and they will probably still be around 100 years from now when the current human population is gone. That does not mean that one must put up with their presence in the home. There are safe methods for getting rid of them and that should be done at the first possible moment after their discovery.
